Birds Cook Islands

Rarotonga, the capital island of the Cook Islands is home to three Pacific endemic birds i.e. kakerori (Pomarea dimidiata) or Rarotonga Flycatcher which is found mostly in the Takitumu Conservation Area, a nature reserve set aside by the landowners to protect its biodiversity, the ioi (Aplonis cinerascens) or Rarotonga Starling found in the inland forest areas and the kukupa (Ptilinopus rarotongensis) or Fruitdove found both on the lowlands as well as forested areas.
